How do you see the market research industry evolving and how can you contribute to it?

The present economic slow-down and other emerging problems of our time, such as the growing concern for global warming, the growing need for new renewable energy sources or demographic changes due to higher life expectancy, are all factors that affect markets. Adapting to market changes requires that the market research industry must adjust the way it studies the markets. Guiding the producers to be more flexible, innovative and different from one another is one of the key roles that the market research industry has to play today.

As an engineer, I have a strong mathematical background as well as precise technical knowledge in Material Science. Such precise knowledge can be particularly useful when dealing with renewable energy markets, as well as the material recycling markets, both of which are playing an increasing role today, and will be doing so tomorrow. In parallel to my studies, being President of a student-run association that specialises in IT project management has though me things about myself, others and numerous ways how business can be done today. My curiosity, discipline and ease to communicate with others can only result in creating a positive working atmosphere, which is vital when confronting new challenges.

What are in your opinion the necessary skills for market researchers in the present environment?

Market researchers must have a strong analytical mind and clear understanding of the particular market. Understanding the particular good or service (requiring a solid technical background), knowing who the producers and clients are, and how their relationship and individual behaviour evolved over past events are questions that must be carefully analysed.

The market researcher must also be flexible, innovative, and must have well developed social skills. Being a “Team player” and being able to communicate and share knowledge with others is crucial.

How do you see your career unfolding and what are your aspirations?

First of all, I intend to obtain a MSc. degree in Materials Sciences and Engineering, with a specialisation in Production Processes and Optimisation at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, EPFL. I would then consider working in R&D for a couple of years, followed probably by an MBA. The latter would enable me to see other facets of the engineering industry, and provide access to the more managerial positions. Nevertheless, I am also considering the consulting industry which is of particular appeal to me.

Developing new renewable energy sources, as well as improving the recyclability of materials is crucial for tomorrow’s world. I would like to participate in the technological development of such solutions, as well as to take part in their promotion and implementation.
