With markets throughout the world becoming increasingly more competitive, market research will be of interest for many organizations. I believe effective market research is the basis for success of any product and service and their impact in the future marketplace.
From a Communication science perspective, I see a lot of opportunities for market research in Internet and social media. Internet and social media are not only the main (future) playground of companies and their products and services, they also bring important insights into all sorts of social structures and accordingly interesting data gathering opportunities.
Besides bringing new methodologies and fresh eyes to existing frameworks, I can contribute in analyzing and applying new opportunities of social media in market research.
What are, in your opinion, the necessary skills for market researchers in the present environment?Curiosity – Having a passion for finding things out to the bottom will definitely make you a better and more job-satisfied market researcher.
Excellent with data – In order to be able to ‘find things out to the bottom’, a marker researcher should be excellent in collecting, organizing, selecting, analyzing, and interpreting data from all sort of areas.
First-rate social skills – Social skills are lastly necessary for communication of insights with customers and colleagues. Translation from statistical evidence to practical applied advice is a key step in market research.
How do you see your career unfolding and what are your aspirations?I love conducting research and as I wrote, finding things out to the bottom. My master thesis consisting of a network analysis focusing on difficulties and opportunities regarding knowledge exchange and collaboration between scientific and practical organizations, taught me that besides conducting research, the translation of my findings to insights and advice relevant for practice is just as important for me. I would thus love to work for a company that gives me the opportunity to combine and develop myself on these two aspects.
