Abstract

Global, regional and local experts take a critical look at the role of research in boosting growth in Asia Pacific and decide what needs to happen tomorrow if the region is to become the world leader of research.

Travyn has extensive experience working with global and regional markets including Asia. His current role at Millward Brown covers Asia and Pacific as well as Africa. In his prior role, he was Managing Director of ACNielsen Customised Research for Asia Pacific, with responsibility for 17 markets. Travyn also held the position of Managing Director of ACNielsen International Research, Online and AC Nielsen Consult, where he was extremely involved in on-line research and development. In his early career he was Director of Statistical Methods in the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Travyn is current past President of AMSRO the Association in Australia that represents over 100 leading research supplies. In this role Travyn sat on the Australian on-line task force and contributed to the development of QSOAP (Quality Standard for Online Access Panels).

Nicholas joined Standard Chartered Bank on 1 August, 2005 as its Regional Head of Research, Asia, covering the region’s macro economic development. He leads a team of country economists based in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Shanghai, Seoul and Singapore. Based in Hong Kong, Nick was formerly with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA, the de facto central bank of Hong Kong), where he was a senior economist specializing in macro-economic and policy research, with special responsibility for policy issues related to international and regional organisations like the Bank for International Settlement (BIS), and Executives’ Meeting of East Asia-Pacific Central Banks (EMEAP). Prior to the seven years in HKMA, Nick was the Regional Chief Economist of Merrill Lynch, covering the Asia Pacific region from Korea to India. With Merrill Lynch, Nick spent six years in Singapore and then five years in Hong Kong. He established Merrill’s China research team and was instrumental to the overseas issuance of China’s first global bond, and the first H and B shares. In 1998, Nick led his Merrill team to second place in the Institutional Investor Asian poll. Nick is an economics graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a MBA from Warwick University in the UK and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

david lowden


David Lowden was appointed Chief Executive of TNS in January 2006. He has since restructured the business to meet clients’ demands for: cost effectiveness and quality of data collection; increased insight and analysis; innovation; and globalisation of services. David’s focus is on ensuring that TNS builds on its strong position in the industry to become the global leader in delivering value-added information and insights that help TNS clients make more effective business decisions. David joined TNS in February 1999 as Finance Director and in 2003 became Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for the group’s regional operations. Prior to joining TNS, David was Senior VP and CFO, initially of Nielsen International and then of AC Nielsen, having previously worked at Norcross plc and Federal Express. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a BA in Business & Administration.

Michihiro Ota


Michihiro started his professional career at INTAGE in 1980, and since then, has developed his experience in several fields including quantitative and qualitative methods, client service specialists for FMCG and non-FMCG industries, and managerial roles for international business development of INTAGE.   His current responsibility at the INTAGE Group includes the management of the President's Office, planning and implementation of global strategy, and promoting corporate communications of the company.   As the chairperson of Japan Marketing Research Association (JMRA) International PR Committee, he has also been responsible for the promotion of international PR activities of JMRA.

john sergeant


John is the head of Public Affairs for Ipsos Australia and the Chair of the Ipsos-Eureka Social Research Institute. He is also the Vice Principal of St Andrew’s College, within the University of Sydney.
John Sergeant was President of the Australian Market and Social Research Society from 2000 to 2004, leading a number of changes to the research profession in the areas of ethics, privacy, professional accreditation, government relations and quality assurance. He was subsequently elected as a Fellow of the Society.
John has presented papers at the previous two ESOMAR Asia-Pacific Conferences.
During the 1990’s, he held the world record for the highest amount of money lost in a television quiz show.
