7. Bulgarian Commissioner to deal with Consumer Protection
As Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU on 1 January 2007, candidates have been nominated for the position of Commissioner – with a reshuffle in responsibilities in the European Commission. Bulgarian Commissioner-designate Meglena Kuneva has been nominated as Commissioner for Consumer Protection splitting DG SANCO, the Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General.The Consumer Affairs portfolio deals with advertising, consumer protection, unfair commercial practices and other related issues, some of which are very relevant for the market research industry. Kuneva is currently the Bulgarian Minister for European Affairs, has a background in law and journalism, is fluent in English, French and Russian and was Bulgaria’s Chief Negotiator with the EU.
