PRESS RELEASE – February 2010:

European market research industry spells out priorities to the European Commission on the legal framework for protecting personal data

The European Commission announced its intention in 2009 to review the EU Data Protection Directive, which was originally agreed between the EU Institutions in 1995. This review would assess whether an updated legislative proposal is necessary. Technological developments amongst other issues raised significant discussions about the current Directive’s fitness for purpose.

On the occasion of Data Protection Day 2010 (28 January), the European Commission Viviane Reding announced that “The EU has to lead the world when it comes to protecting personal data” and that the Commission will present a future proposal for a robust legal instrument in line with the Lisbon Treaty and the Charter of Fundamental Rights in 2010 once it has assessed the responses to its recent public consultation.
