The move from transactional to relational research is at the forefront of change in the Market Research industry.
Technological advancements, societal changes and the current economic crisis are creating new dynamics – challenges to the “traditional” wisdom of market research and marketing. There is an increasing emphasis on the need to continually seek and demonstrate new value propositions. The face of market research is changing and with it so are many of the approaches and methodologies we employ. Through the use of collaborative relations, active listening, increased dialogue and observation, market research is assessing its position and developing a diverse set of skills both traditional and new to meet these latest demands and to ensure that market research advances and adapts to this new marketplace.
As we enter a new decade, we as an industry must stop and take stock - to reflect on our research and approaches from the past, differentiate between perception and reality and determine what the future holds.
ESOMAR is therefore proud to announce Odyssey 2010 – The Changing Face of Market Research to be held in Athens, the birthplace of critical thought and the foundation of modern culture.

"Hospitality" is the official translation of filoxenia, but it doesn't adequately describe it. Filoxenia literally means "love of strangers." It is a generosity of spirit, a joyful “what's mine is yours” attitude, in which Greeks take great pride as a defining value.
Greece is a country that has always had a special welcome for guests and after a few wonderful days here in Athens it is clear that their traditional hospitality is even more evident than usual. The Greeks want visitors and not just for the economic benefits they bring. They want them because Greeks are natural hosts. They simply love to offer friendship to foreigners.
So if any of you are harbouring doubts about whether to come to the ESOMAR Congress because it is in Athens let me assure you that it is the reason you should come. Few places in these troubled times will make you feel so welcome.
As I look out of my hotel window I can see the Acropolis on one hill on my right and the church of Agios Georgios on Lycabettus Hill on my left. The view is without doubt one of the most spectacular in the world. The Saronic Gulf, with its milky blue sea, is in the distance and the islands sparkle as the sun sets.
A warm welcome awaits you at the ESOMAR Congress this September. Nobody puts on a party like the Greeks and ESOMAR is the perfect conference at which to taste Greek hospitality.
Kalo Taxidi (good journey) is the traditional wish to travellers and one that I wish all ESOMAR delegates. A wonderful welcome awaits you at the 2010 ESOMAR Congress. Filoxenia
