Abstract

Through designing innovative solutions for Philips Healthcare over the past 20 years, Philips Design has developed a successful research-driven innovation approach for healthcare that is helping to guide business strategy, marketing communications, brand positioning as well as new product development.

Some key aspects of our innovation approach for healthcare include:

  • Considering people and their health in the context of daily life and seeking to understand the real impact of healthcare experiences on lifestyle over time
  • Gathering multi-stakeholder perspectives including challenges, motivations, drivers and barriers for different players in each healthcare territory
  • Leveraging the visual skills of design to bring insights to life, enhancing innovation processes and outcomes
  • Unpacking the complexity of each healthcare experience to enable innovation without trivializing or over-simplifying the clinical context
  • Facilitating innovation teams to define a shared vision and draw on expertise from diverse disciplines

Using case studies from recent projects we can illustrate how we approach innovation in healthcare, how research methods are evolving to include design research techniques, how insights are used to set strategic direction, how design can help reveal hidden opportunity areas and encourage multi-disciplinary teams to define solutions that can make a real difference.
