5. European Commission White Paper on Obesity

The EU White Paper “A strategy for Europe on nutrition, overweight and obesity related health issues” on food advertising and marketing practices aims to address rising concerns about obesity especially among young people. It calls for better consumer information through nutritional labelling; codes of conduct if marketing messages are intended to influence eating habits (especially those of children) as well as educational campaigns about the dangers of poor nutrition and obesity.

Next steps: It appears that the Commission does not believe that advertising restrictions are needed but it will evaluate in 2010 if self-regulatory measures by food and drinks industry are sufficient. Researchers should stay alert to the longer term possibility of future restrictions on research relating to food and drinks.
