Public Policy Update - February 2008
7. Children’s privacy issues
The European Commission public consultation on safer internet for children last year focused on illegal and harmful content, user-generated and on-line communications. It highlighted the useful role of internet in education, information and entertainment and the difficulty of completely protecting children and young people from harmful, illegal or sexually undesirable content. Meanwhile a Eurobarometer survey on children’s usage of online technologies published in August 2007 showed that children are generally aware of the potential online risks and the necessary precautions.
Next steps: The Commission wants to harmonise legislation to prevent on-line children abuse. It will continue promoting awareness and educational campaigns and push this up the political agenda. It will also refine how the EU's Safer Internet programme can best contribute to internet and mobile phone child safety. Researchers should take extra care when surveying children online.More information
