8. How to ensure ISO 20252 compliance from subcontractors
By Lex Olivier, Director General, EFAMRO

Companies that have started to implement the global ISO 20252 quality standards have had to think about how to deal with subcontracting. As long as the penetration of ISO 20252 certified agencies remains limited, the ISO requirement that subcontracting should be carried out by accredited sub-contractors is affected by the lack of certified subcontractors.

Various associations and global research companies are working on procedures and templates to ensure ISO 20252 compliance by subcontractors. For the time being however, a practical solution could be to develop a standard briefing document which informs the potential subcontractor of the requirements implied by working under ISO 20252 accreditation. If the subcontractor then submits a quotation, this might indicate that they will adhere to the ISO 20252 standard for this job. However there must also be a common understanding on which work elements should be open for verification and inspection. This allows the outsourcing company to demonstrate to their own assessors that they have made the utmost effort to ensure ISO 20252 subcontracting compliance.
