Public Policy Update - February 2008
13. Global data storage and retention
The House Foreign Affairs Committee passed the Global Online Freedom Act (H.R. 275) in October. This includes a possible prohibition on US businesses from locating any data containing personally identifiable information (PII) within an “Internet-restricting country” – which includes the People’s Republic of China, a frequent location for outsourced services. It is not clear how far this legislation will ultimately advance but researchers should be wary of where and how they keep their data.
